Piecing together a coherent through-line of the plot is difficult, to say the least. I rest on the shoulders of giants, and have had access to the largest accumulation of text related to the material anyone has previously had (mostly because no one had the will, desire, or ability to ask for it, as far as I can tell). Still, what piece of plot to prefer over others can at times be arbitrary and paradoxically important. The changes are ideologically at odds with one another, yet there are few objective criteria on which to make the decisions. So I resort to the subjective—I prefer the original authorial intent wherever possible.
While the gist of the film’s story stayed fundamentally intact throughout development and production, its spirit, imagery, symbolism, and thus its message, would vary greatly.
